Sunday morning, we packed the car and headed south. The day was spent in the car, mostly complaining about the size of Texas and why Kristi chose to live in the middle rather than near some edge that wouldn't require hours and hours of the same view, in the same state. We all agreed that Texas should be divided into at least 4 states, none of which would take longer than 8 hours of drive time to cross.
While many people thought that we should fly to Florida, Sarah, Lucas and I all look forward to the interesting things to be seen along the way. These are the treasures that are missed by the efficiencies of air travel. In Wild Horse, Colorado, for example, we saw three groups of wild turkeys near the road. This was notable because 1) I had never seen so many wild turkeys in a single viewing and 2) I didn't know there was a town in Colorado called Wild Horse.
We weren't in Oklahoma long enough to distinguish it from southern Colorado or northern Texas except for the large sign that said OKLAHOMA. Before we knew it, another sign came along welcoming us to Texas. In case there was any doubt that we were in Texas, the statute of Ronald McDonald on horseback served as a clear reminder. I am happy to say, "We have nothing like that in Colorado!"
We arrived in Austin in the middle of the night, thrilled to be out of the car but amazed to step out into 80+ degrees and 80+ humidity. Wow! It was stifling!
Even so, we were on a high because vacation had begun.
