The big topic around our place last year was skate boarding. Lucas started skating in May with some kids in the neighborhood. His passion ignited almost immediately. Over the summer, his confidence grew with his skills. He is now skating every moment he can. Over Christmas vacation, when he was out of school and the weather was unseasonably warm, he spent 6-8 hours a day at the Denver Skate Park, the largest free outdoor skate park in the country.
Now, he "airs out of bowls" and other stunts that have names only skaters understand.
When its too dark or too cold to skate, he tinkers with his boards, swapping wheels, mounting trucks (the axle-like thingies) or modifying the tension. He has learned a lot from the guys at 303 Boards who are patient and caring enough to share their knowledge with young skaters and old skate supporters, like me.
For example, I was bemoaning the fact that he went through a pair of skate shoes in 6 weeks. ("Went through" in this context means wore a nickel-size whole through the sole and his sock!!) The guys in the shop assured me that he was not being unusually hard on his shoes. According to them, 4 weeks is typical! I'm hoping that winter will extend the life of his shoes just a bit!
I'm sure there will be a lot more skating boarding for Lucas in 2011!
